Client Need: Physiological Adaptation
D. The basic physiological defect caused by anemia is a decrease in the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood and, consequently. a reduction in the amount of oxygen available to the cells. When the anemia develops slowly, the child usually adapts to the declining hemoglobin level in his/her body and can function quite well. When the hemoglobin level falls sufficiently low to produce clinical manifestations, the symptoms that result are due to tissue hypoxia. Manifestations include pallor and muscle weakness, and the child becomes fatigued easily. Central nervous system manifestations include headache. light-headedness, dizziness, irritability. slowed thought processes, decreased attention span, apathy and depression.
A. Abdominal pain and vomiting are not manifestations associated with iron deficiency anemia in a child.
B. Poor posture and unclear speech are not characteristic of a child with iron deficiency anemia.
C. Bradycardia is not seen in a child with a low hemoglobin level. Usually the child is tachycardic and has an increased cardiac output to compensate for the low hemoglobin level. Dyspnea on exertion is possible because of the decreased oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.
